Preventing Mass Shootings in Community Settings

Partnering with U.S. Secret Service to Prevent Mass Shootings

Keeping children safe at school is a responsibility that belongs to everyone and at every level of public service. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is committed to bringing public safety resources to every Illinois community. In 2019, the office initiated a unique collaboration with the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) and other federal agencies to provide a series of trainings on behavioral threat assessment, an approach designed to help prevent mass casualty attacks.

Using research and case studies from past mass attacks in public spaces, the trainings provide recommendations to help faith leaders, educators, law enforcement officials, prosecutors and others identify, assess, and intervene with individuals who exhibit concerning or threatening behaviors.

Each training session is tailored to the audience with the most up-to-date information and will:

  • Identify potential threats and individuals who may pose a risk of engaging in targeted attacks
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the behavioral indicators, triggers, and situational factors of perpetrators of targeted violence
  • Develop multidisciplinary and risk management strategies and interventions to mitigate the risk of harmful outcomes
  • Provide information on Safe 2 Help Illinois, a platform to report school safety concerns or threats
  • Provide information on Department of Homeland Security's Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships and the educational, technical, and financial support they provide
