Direct Victim Assistance

The Office of the Attorney General provides services to crime victims and witnesses who are involved in cases that are being prosecuted by the Office of the Illinois Attorney General. Program services are available to crime victims and witnesses, assistant attorneys general, and any of the 102 state’s attorneys across Illinois who have requested OAG assistance with their criminal cases.

Direct Victim Assistance includes:

• Victim and Witness Notification Notifies crime victims, their families, and witnesses to crime of court dates and relays case information during various stages of the criminal court process.
• Prosecution Assistance where we serve as a liaison between assistant attorneys general and crime victims, their families, and witnesses to crime throughout the duration of the case. It also provides support for crime victims, their families, and witnesses to crime requesting assistance in attending court dates.
• Victim Rights Advocacy to advise crime victims, their families, and witnesses to crime of their rights according to the Illinois Constitution and the Illinois Crime Victim’s Bill of Rights.
• Crime Victim Compensation provides information on crime victim compensation and assistance in filing applications.
• Referrals to provide information for counseling and other relevant social services based on a comprehensive statewide network of local resources.

File a Crime Victims Rights Violation Complaint

Beginning January 1, 2023, the Office of the Illinois Attorney General will receive complaints, investigate allegations, and make recommendations to address crime victim’s rights violations, as described in Article I, Section 8.1 of the Illinois Constitution and the Rights of Crime Victims and Witnesses Act (725 ILCS 120).

The Attorney General will create and administer a course of training for employees and offices of the State of Illinois that fail to comply with provisions of Illinois law pertaining to the treatment of crime victims as described in the Illinois Constitution and the Rights of Crime Victims and Witnesses Act. This office will also have the authority to make recommendations to employees and offices of the State of Illinois to respond more effectively to the needs of crime victims, including regarding the violation of the rights of a crime victim.

Complaints regarding victim rights violations as defined in the Act may be submitted by crime victims, parent/ guardians, victim’s representatives or advocates, the prosecutor, defense attorney, judge, victim’s rights attorney, or assigned victim witness staff in the criminal case at issue. The complaint form can be submitted by mail (the form has a submit button that will not work in a browser, so the form will need to be downloaded to your PC).
