Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced a Cook County judge sentenced a Chicago man found guilty of murder to prison for his role in the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy in the city’s Brighton Park neighborhood.
Attorney General Raoul’s office prosecuted Sergio Gonzalez, 29, of Chicago, who was sentenced to 50 years in prison by Cook County Circuit Court Judge Stanley Sacks. Gonzalez was previously found guilty of murder and of discharging a firearm by a Cook County jury.
“Today’s sentence holds the defendant accountable for taking the life of a minor and forever leaving a family with the pain of losing a loved one to gun violence,” Raoul said. “The epidemic of gun violence affects communities across our state, and I will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to hold perpetrators accountable and help keep our neighborhoods safe.”
According to Raoul, Gonzalez and his accomplice, Jose Juarez, fired multiple shots out of a moving vehicle on the evening of Jan. 7, 2016, striking David Gonzalez eight times as he walked on the sidewalk. After fleeing the scene, both Sergio Gonzalez and Juarez were apprehended by members of the Chicago Police Department. David Gonzalez – who was not related to the shooter – was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Juarez was convicted of David Gonzalez’s murder in 2019 and sentenced to 45 years in prison. Sergio Gonzalez faces pending charges related to another murder case and a second attempted murder case, both of which are being prosecuted by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.
